Vectric Vcarve Pro Editing Vectorized Artwork

I right clicked on the first file and told it to open using my favorite application, Vectric VCarve PRO 4.0. FiveToolWoodDesign.Even though it was 12:30 AM by the time I got home, I immediately ran to my PC and plopped the Celtic Frames and Borders CD-ROM in the drive and homed right in on the graphics in the EPS folder. USA Drink Coaster Cut Files - Fun Patriotic Designs for CNC & Laser - VCarve and Carbide Create Files - CrV, C2D, DxF, EpS, SvG, PdF. Of course, I immediately nixed all of the offerings that didn't include the files in EPS format and settled on purchasing Celtic Designs for Artists and Craftspeople, Dragons and Wizards and the previously mentioned Celtic Frames and Borders CD-ROM and Book.Leaf Tray - 3D STL Model designed for Aspire Vcarve Carveco Artcam. Some only had one or two obviously raster (bitmap) formats while others had clip art in up to six formats (TIFF, PICT, JPEG, GIF, BMP and EPS). Looking through the different titles I noticed that the ones with CD-ROM contained various file formats on the disc.

So, once again, I fired up Vectric VCarve PRO 4.0 to put its new 'Import and Trace Image Files' feature ('Fit vectors to bitmap' button on the Drawing Tab) to work on the 001.TIF file. I dragged myself to bed more than a tad disappointed.After a well balanced breakfast of buttered toast and a half-dozen blueberry muffins I figured I had enough carbs coursing through my bloodstream to tackle the vector lacking Dover clip-art challenge. Unbelievably, all six data formats contained only raster data, there wasn't a vector to be found. What a bummer, and obviously not a problem with VCarve PRO. The file probably contains only bitmap data'.

What you're looking for is to make the image large enough so that the detail is distinct, but not so large as to cause the image to become overly blurry. What you want to do is make the raster image a decent size, not too small and not too big, before performing the 'Fit vectors to bitmap' operation. Yes, I know the function is labeled 'Scale Selected Vectors' but it works on the raster image too. Make sure the imported image is selected, then scale the image up or down as necessary using the 'Scale Selected Vectors' option on the 'Drawing menu' under the 'Edit Vectors' heading. Like I said, it really doesn't matter as you can adjust the material size later.Next import the raster image (*.bmp, *.jpg, *.gif, *.tif, *.png, or *.jpeg) file using the 'File > Import bitmap' function. For some reason, still not entirely known to myself, I choose starting material dimensions of 24.0 x 24.0 x 0.75'.

Adjust the vectors position from there.Once you're all set with your layout, you're ready to generate some tool paths. You can then use the 'Centering' (Drawing menu under Align Vectors) functions to place your vector image within the material. After that select your vectors and 'Scale Selected Vectors' to fit on the material. In the latter case, the 'Zoom', 'Select All Open Vectors' (Edit > Select All Open Vectors'), 'Select All Duplicate Vectors' (Edit > Select All Duplicate Vectors'), and 'Node editing' functions will definitely help.Once you're happy with the vectorization you can go about changing the material size to the size and thickness of the material you have available, 'Edit > Material Size'.

VCarve Pro will only import bitmaps in the following formats *.bmp, *.jpg, *.gif, *.tif, *.png, or *.jpeg as noted in the previous post. If you don't have PhotoVCarve check out the available trial version.I gotcha. On the bright side, Vectric PhotoVCarve produces fantastic results. The resulting vectors produced using (almost) every vector conversion program is more than disappointing. Unfortunately, that's just the way it is when trying to convert crummy images to vectors.If you're trying to vectorize photos with a lot of detail and colors (family, friends, pets, sunsets, etc.) you can pretty much hang it up. It's amazing how quickly you can learn to use the VCarve Pro tools listed above when you have sufficient incentive.For what it's worth, sometimes it is easier and quicker to use the drawing tools and the node editor to hand trace a small, blurry, lo-res image than trying to get the 'Fit vectors to bitmap' function to generate something usable.

The 'Fit Vectors to Bitmap' function works great on the *.tif images.Here's the 165.eps file converted to 165.tif using CorelDraw X3 then converted to vector format using VCarve Pro 4 and saved to *.dxf format. The other ones I tried were Xara Xtreme 3.2 (didn't work), Microsoft Paint (didn't work), Inkscape (didn't work), IrfanView v4.00 (worked but poor conversion), XnView v1.91.3 (worked but poor conversion), and PMView Pro v3.51 (worked but poor conversion).Your best bet though, is if you purchased the Dover Electronic Clip Art Book is to use VCarve Pro 4 to import the 165.tif image off of the CD if there is one. If it opens correctly you then need to use the 'export' or 'save as' option to save the *.eps image in one of the supported formats.I just tried several different graphics packages and found that CorelDraw X3 works the best, so far.
